Lecture
Series
Departmental lecture series introduce the broad spectrum of research
to students:
- Faculty Research Seminars introduce students to the research
fields of the faculty and helps them choose thesis advisors. In
these seminars, senior faculty describe their research interests
in terms comprehensible to beginning graduate students. All of
the main research areas represented in the department are covered
within a two-year period.
- Weekly Departmental
Colloquium provides a forum for outstanding mathematicians
from all over the world to present the latest results at the forefront
of research.
- Distinguished Lecture
Series features famous mathematicians such as I.M Singer,
Jean-Pierre Serre, Raoul Bott, and Sir Michael Atiyah.
- Institute of Pure and Applied
Mathematics (IPAM) offers various lectures, tutorials, and
programs. IPAM provides an environment where new cross-disciplinary
collaborations can be formed to broaden the range of mathematical
ideas employed by scientists. One of the recent events sponsored
by IPAM and the Department of Mathematics was the International
Conference on Scientific Computing, Partial Differential Equations
and Image Processing.

The Perspectives in Mathematics seminars are organized by our
graduate student societies, Graduate Student Outreach (GSO)
and the UCLA chapter of the Society for
Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UCLA SIAM).
These seminars provide faculty members
the opportunity to speak to graduate students on current research in
mathematics. SIAM has recently broadened this to include speakers
from other departments at UCLA and industry.
