Professor Andrea Bertozzi headed up NSF Research Training Group (Summer 2007)
Professor Andrea Bertozzi headed up the NSF Research Training Group in Applied Differential Equations and Scientific Computing this summer. This Research Training Group supports undergraduates and beginning graduate students doing research in applied differential equations and scientific computing. The group is a consortium of students from UCLA, Harvey Mudd College and from additional universities. This web page gives an overview and research results for the REU portion of the program. A number of the mentors are supported on regular research grants, especially when the REU students are integrated into a research group with PhD students and postdocs. The following link outlines projects completed Summer 2006 and 2007

Sherwood Prize:  Michael Bannister and Samantha Nieveen (Spring 2007)
Michael Bannister is a Pure Mathematics major, with recognition in Departmental Honors as well as the Departmental Scholar program. His postgraduate plans are to study Algebraic Geometry at the University of Michigan where he will be supported by the Rackham Science Award a three-year fellowship awarded by the University of Michigan.

Samantha Nieveen is a Pure Mathematics major, with recognition in Departmental Honors as well as the Departmental Scholar program. She entered UCLA as a Regent’s Scholar has been the recipient of the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, as well as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She has also won two years in a row the Basil Gordon Prize in the Mathematics Department for the highest score on the Putnam Exam. Samantha’s research in conjunction with the National Science Foundation’s REU program at Oregon State has resulted in a paper coauthored titled "Covering Spaces and Subgroups of the Free Group" Samantha’s post-graduate plans include a position at Farmer’s Insurance as an Actuarial Assistant whereby her excellent math abilities can be put to practical use.

Daus Prize: Keith Merrill, Matthew Stimpson, Lindsay Henson, Yu Man Tam (Spring 2007)
Merrill: Keith is a Pure Math major. He was a Regent’s Scholar upon acceptance to UCLA and belonged to the Departmental Honors program as a math major. He was a participant in the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate Program last summer working with Professor Robert Brown. His postgraduate plans will consist of pursuing his Ph.D. in mathematics at University of California, Davis whereby he was granted a five-year fellowship.
Stimpson: Matthew is a Pure Math major. He is a member of Departmental Honors, as well as a participant in the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate Program. Last summer in this program working with Professor James White he completed a write up on introductory manifold theory and a copule of its applications to General Relativity. This summer he plans on working with Professor Robert Brown in the same program where he will study fixed points of multimaps of tori. Upon graduation, Matthew will be weighing his options in the actuarial or financial fields before applying to a Ph.D. program in Mathematics.
Henson: Lindsay is an Applied Mathematics major. She was also a Regent’s Scholar upon acceptance to UCLA and maintained a 4.0 major and cumulative GPA. She will be starting her career upon graduation as an analyst at Cornerstone Research specializing in Litigation Consulting.
Tam: Yu Man is a Mathematics/Economics major. He was awarded the Deans Honor List this year as well as Departmental Honors. He will be working at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis as a research analyst with other Economists. His intent is to study Economics at the graduate level upon finishing his tenure at the Reserve Bank.

Ira Boyle Transamerica Prize: Susan Cheung (Spring 2007)
Cheung: Susan is a Mathematics/Economics major. She has taken an active role in the Actuarial Club, performing as public relations chair this year. She has been active in recruiting students to the club, as well as being an active conduit in linking students with professionals and UCLA alumni in the actuarial field. Susan will be interning as an actuarial analyst with Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance this summer. She intends to pursue the actuarial field professionally upon graduation, ideally with Transamerica Occidental.

Undergraduate Honors, Awards, and Achievements (Spring 2007)
Kevin Leung and Vladislav Voroninski Along with Professor Andrea Bertozzi and Electrical Engineering graduate students, Vlad and Kevin co-authored a paper titled "A Second-Generation Micro-Vehicle Testbed for Cooperative Control and Sensing Strategies" (submitted to 2007 American Control Conference), September 2006.
Meghdi Aboulian, Vladislav Voroninski, Kevin Leung, Krystle McBride: Along with Professor Andrea Bertozzi and Professor Carmeliza Navasca, undergrad students' co-authored a paper titled "Implementations of Control Laws for Motion Camouflage in a Pursuit-Evasion System", November 2006. Its a 4-year scholarship worth $20,000. She is also a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national Mathematics Honors Society.
Vladislav Voroninski: Along with Professor Andrea Bertozzi and mathematics graduate students, Vlad co-authored a paper titled "Robotic Path Planning and Visibility with Limited Sensor Data", (submitted to the 2007 American Control Conference), September 2006.

UCLA Math Recent Undergraduate Honors (Spring 2007)
Arash Fayzzadeh recieved the honor of working on Modeling Research project with Andrea Bertozzi and Martin Short titled "Crime Modeling."
Meghana Reddy became recipient of the Henry and Elsie Clay Scholarship for Physical Sciences. This is the first year the foundation awarded the scholarship, where 13-15 first-year students are awarded based on academic excellence. Its a 4-year scholarship worth $20,000. She is also a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national Mathematics Honors Society.
Ekaterina Merkurjev had the honor of attending the Pacific Coast Undergraduate Mathematics Conference at Pepperdine Univeristy (March 2007).
