Professor Serre is one of the great figures of contemporary mathematics. His work in Algebra, Topology, Algebraic Geometry, Number Theory, and many other areas has been fundamental and profound. He has also been a source of inspiration for a generation of mathematicians through his books and lectures. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1954 and the Wolf Prize in 2000 which he shared with Raoul Bott.
