Guests can Access their Home Site on a NCD jimc 950508 Many times a short term department guest will want to access his/her computer account at the home institution, but will not need full access to UCLA-Mathnet facilities. Here is the procedure to use a Mathnet NCD X-terminal without logging in to Mathnet. One possibility is to simply use the telnet session, like this: Press setup. If you see a big menu with a bunch of buttons, click in "Telnet Session". Then type the name of your home site, e.g. plague-ether.berkeley.edu, and login in the normal way. If you see a narrow menu bar, click on "Terminals", and in the submenu slide down to "New Telnet". Type your home site name in the "Host" box. The telnet window will appear and you can login the normal way. If you want full X-windows capability, do it like this: First determine the name of the X-terminal (ask your host, or the computer consultant). For this example we will use dolores. Press "setup". If you see a big "Main Menu" with a lot of buttons, this section applies to you. If you see a narrow menu bar at the top of the screen, skip down to "New NCD Software". Select "X Server Parameters" by clicking in its box with the left mouse button. Click in "Display Manager Server". Type 128.97.4.252 (this is the address of a machine which will refuse XDM service.) Click in "Action on Failure" until it says "Stop". Click on "Death Timeout" and type in 1 (seconds). Click on "Restart Session". It will ask for confirmation; click again. You should now see a blank screen. Press "setup" again. Select "Network Parameters". Click on "TCP/IP Access Control" so it says "Off". ----- The above steps only need to be done the first time through this procedure, unless you have restarted the NCD. Select the main menu (bottom of this menu). From there, select the Telnet Session (upper left corner). In the Telnet Session, type the name of your home site, such as plague-ether.berkeley.edu ----- From here on, the procedure is about the same for both old and new NCD software. Log in, in the usual way. Your home site may want you to use the delete key rather than backspace for correcting mistakes. If you see ^H then use the delete key. Do you have a .xsession file? If so, once logged on, enter these commands: setenv DISPLAY dolores.math.ucla.edu:0.0 .xsession & logout You need to append ".math.ucla.edu" to the NCD's name. Wait a moment and see that .xsession actually started running before logging out. If you don't have a .xsession file, try substituting /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession If that doesn't work, substitute the command "xterm". For the old NCD software only, select "Main Menu", and from there, select "Done". For the new software, select "Cancel" to close the telnet window, and in the main menu choose "Console", and "Close" in the submenu. The initial xterm should appear after 10 to 20 seconds. If you ran a .xsession file, your regular window manager should be running and your usual Xresources (fonts, colors, etc.) should be in effect. If you set a private font path using nonstandard directories, though, they probably won't be accessible to our font server. When you finish, if another user may want to use the machine, undo the changes you made by restarting the NCD. Press the "setup" key. For the old software, click on "Restart Server". For the new software, choose "Console", and "Reboot" in the submenu. Confirm the reboot. New NCD Software: Use this procedure if after pressing setup you get a narrow menu bar at the top of the screen. Click on "Setup". In the submenu, choose "Change Setup Parameters". You get a big window of parameter categories. Use the scrollbar to move to the later portion; find "Commands and Startup". Click on the little square at the left end. In the "Startup Commands" section, you will see "login somehost"; click on that line, then on "Delete". At the bottom of the setup window, turn off "Auto Save File" by clicking on its little square. Then press "Apply", then "Cancel". In the main menu, choose "Login", and in the submenu, "Logout". Confirm "Yes". You end up with a blank screen. Press the setup key again. (You may have to wait a moment for the menu.) ---- Now you have a choice of procedure. If your home site manages X sessions with xdm, do the following: Choose "Login"; on the submenu choose "Login New X Session". After a moment the xdm chooser appears. In the "Host" box type the name of your xdm host. Press enter. In a few moments your home site's login banner should appear. Login as if at your home site. See above for how to restart the NCD after logging out, since Mathnet users won't be able to log in at your home site. ---- If your home site is not using xdm or refuses to manage a foreign X-terminal, use the telnet method. Press "Cancel" to close the xdm chooser, if you tried it and failed. Click on "Terminals", and in the submenu slide down to "New Telnet". Type your home site name in the "Host" box. The telnet window will appear and you can login the normal way. Continue as described under the old software once logged in to a telnet session.
