Email Access: Outlook Express
 
All examples below are for the sample user "Math User" email address mathuser@math.ucla.edu. User "Math User" is on machine cedar.math.ucla.edu (which you will see in some places). If your home machine is walnut.math.ucla.edu, or another machine, use that whereever necessary. Also, not that not all of the screens you see below will actually appear when you perform the install.


When you first start Outlook Express, the following may appear:

Enter YOUR name in Display Name:

Enter YOUR email address:

Select IMAP as the incoming server type.
Enter your home machine as your Incoming/Outgoing servers.
(e.g., cedar.math.ucla.edu, below - it could be walnut.math.ucla.edu).

Enter YOUR email "name" as the Account Name.
You can type the password in, to remember it (or, not).

Click on Finish. The account setup is complete.

At some point, or if you frist try to check your mail, one or more of the following screens may appear.
Answer OK or Yes as appropriate:

In the example below, when you try to check mail, there is an attempt to log in to the server (cedar is listed; but your machine may be 'walnut'). Provide the User Name and Password (your email password) as appropriate.

You may see a list of your IMAP folders, that are on your home (linux) account:

Again, this example is for cedar (you will see your home machine, which may be walnut).
Click on the full server name (in example below, it's 'cedar.math.ucla.edu').

Select Tools, select Accounts from the drop down menu

Select the "Mail" tab. You will see a list of Accounts. Select your home machine (of type mail (default)).
In the example below, it's 'cedar.math.ucla.edu'. Then click on the Properties box at the right.

You'll see the following box pop up. Click on the Servers tab.

For incoming/outgoing mail, type in your home server
(cedar is listed below; your home server may be "walnut.math.ucla.edu").
Also, click on the check box next to "My server requires authentication".
Then, click on the "Settings" box to the right of that.

Select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server".
Click on OK, you should return to the previous window, and so select (click on) the Advanced tab.

Use "either one" of the configurations below.
For "both" of them, click on the boxes next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".

Then, Click on the IMAP tab, type in 'mail' as your "Root folder path" and check the "Check for new messages in all folders" box.

After you click on Apply (and/or OK), then it may ask you to refresh your folder list. You may see the following boxes pop up below. Answer as appropriate. (Yes, and OK after typing in the information.)

CERTIFICATION: Please NOTE:, these steps MAY NOT BE NECESSARY

At this point, if you are still be unable to send mail. You may need to set up a Certificate first.
In order to do this, you will need to use the Web Browser "Internet Explorer" (NOT Netscape, Mozilla, or Firefox), and type in (or copy and paste) the following in the URL bar:

The window below will pop up. Select "Open" to start the Certification process.

Click on the "Install Certificate" box:

This Welcome box pops up. Click on Next >

Select the "Automatically select the certificate store..." Click on Next >

If you get this window, you're just about done (with a successful completion):

That's it! If all went according to above, you should be able to send and receive mail over the Math Net.
